چکیده

The existence results we discuss for each of these problems are ones whereby known solutions (sometimes satisfying certain nondegeneracy hypotheses) are glued together to produce new solutions. Although this sort of procedure is quite well-known, there have been some recent advances on which we wish to report here. We also discuss what has been established about the moduli spaces of all solutions to these problems, and report on some work in progress concerning global aspects of these moduli spaces. In the final section we present a new compactness result for the ‘unmarked moduli spaces’ for problem III. Although the analysis underlying each of these problems differs somewhat from one case to the next, there are many common themes. The basic point which makes each of these problems tractable is the fact that the geometry of the ends of the manifolds of interest is well-understood. The ends of a surface Σ in case I are either asymptotically planes or catenoids, in case II the ends are asymptotically periodic, and in case III,

Homotopy Theory of the Master Equation Package Applied to Algebra and Geometry: a Sketch of Two Interlocking Programs

We interpret mathematically the pair (master equation, solution of master equation) up to equivalence, as the pair (a presentation of a free triangular dga T over a combination operad O, dga map of T into C, a dga over O) up to homotopy equivalence of dgOa maps, see Definition 1 below. We sketch two general applications: I to the theory of the definition and homotopy theory of infinity versions...

Summary of Current Research

The mathematical questions I find most interesting are those concerning moduli spaces and topological invariants in geometry—especially involving noncompact, singular or infinite dimensional spaces—which can be approached through the analysis of PDE. I specialize in methods of geometric microlocal analysis and index theory, and I have a keen interest in problems arising from mathematical physic...

A census of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds

The census provides a basic collection of noncompact hyperbolic 3-manifolds of finite volume. It contains descriptions of all hyperbolic 3manifolds obtained by gluing the faces of at most seven ideal tetrahedra. Additionally, various geometric and topological invariants are calculated for these manifolds. The findings are summarized and a listing of all manifolds appears in the microfiche suppl...

Simple Type and the Boundary of Moduli Space

We measure, in two distinct ways, the extent to which the boundary region of moduli space contributes to the “simple type” condition of Donaldson theory. Using a geometric representative of μ(pt), the boundary region of moduli space contributes 6/64 of the homology required for simple type, regardless of the topology or geometry of the underlying 4-manifold. The simple type condition thus reduc...

Relations among Fixed Points

Let M be a smooth manifold with a circle action, and {P } be the fixed point sets. The problem I want to discuss in this paper is how to get the topological information of one relatively complicated fixed point set, say P 0 , from the other much simpler fixed points. Such problems are interesting in symplectic geometry and geometric invariant theory, especially in the study of moduli spaces. In...
